How to Get Free Google Shopping Listings in South Africa
Yes, you can list your products on Google for free in South Africa. Free Google Shopping listings come from Google Merchant Center: you create a free account, verify your website, send Google a product feed and fix any errors it flags. Approved products can then show on the Shopping tab, Google Search, Google Images and Google Lens without you paying for a single click.
This guide walks through the full set-up for Shopify and WooCommerce stores, the product data Google needs and the mistakes that get products disapproved. It is part of our complete guide to SEO for online stores in South Africa, which covers the wider picture of getting your store found on Google.
What are free Google Shopping listings?
Free Google Shopping listings are unpaid product results that show your product image, price in Rand and store name when someone searches on Google. They work like Shopping ads, except you do not pay when a shopper clicks.
According to Google's help article on showing your products for free, free listings can appear on the Shopping tab, YouTube, Google Search, Google Images and Google Lens. Google is clear that appearance is not guaranteed, because your products compete with other stores for each search.
South Africa is included. Google's Merchant Center list of supported countries and currencies includes South Africa with the South African Rand (ZAR) and notes that the Shopping tab is available to users here.
Why free listings matter for a new store
Organic rankings can take months to build. Free listings take a different route: Google reads your product feed directly, so a brand-new store can appear in product results long before its pages rank in the normal blue links. For most beginners this is the quickest free Google visibility available.
Free listings vs Shopping ads vs organic search
Free listings sit between organic SEO and paid Shopping ads. They use the same product feed as Shopping ads but cost nothing, and they appear faster than organic rankings but with less control over placement.
| Option | Cost per click | What you need | Control over visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free listings | None | Merchant Center and a product feed | Low, based on feed quality |
| Shopping ads | You pay per click | Merchant Center, feed and Google Ads | High, through budget and bids |
| Organic search | None | Optimised pages and time | Medium, built over months |
The sensible order for a beginner is to set up free listings first, because the same Merchant Center account and feed are needed later if you decide to run Shopping ads. Our complete guide to paid ads for online stores explains when paid Shopping campaigns make sense.
Before you start: get your store ready
Google checks your website as well as your products, so a few store basics need to be in place before you connect anything. Missing policies or contact details are among the most common reasons new accounts run into trouble.
- Your store is live. Remove any password page so Google can visit your product pages.
- A refund policy and terms of service are published. Link them in your footer so they are easy to find.
- Contact details are visible. Show at least a phone number, email address, physical address or contact form.
- Delivery costs are set for South Africa. Google needs to know what shoppers will pay for delivery.
- Prices on your site are in Rand and match what you will send in your feed.
- Checkout works with a secure payment method.
Shopify's guide to setting up the Google & YouTube channel lists these requirements and warns that confirming requirements you have not actually met can lead Google to suspend your Merchant Center account. Check each item honestly before you tick the boxes.

How to set up free Google listings on Shopify
Shopify stores connect to Google Merchant Center through the free Google & YouTube app, which creates or links your account and keeps your product feed in sync automatically. You do not need to build a feed file yourself.
- Install the app. In your Shopify admin, add the Google & YouTube sales channel and click to connect your Google account.
- Review the store requirements the app shows you and fix anything missing.
- Connect Google Merchant Center. Choose an existing account or create a new one, then verify it with the code Google sends to your phone.
- Choose South Africa and English as the country and language to sync.
- Check your shipping settings. Shopify notes that only rates from your General shipping profile sync, and you need a shipping zone for South Africa.
- Wait for review and check product statuses in the app's Products tab.
Google's article on free listings says that if you created your Merchant Center account through the Google & YouTube app and meet the requirements, approved products can start appearing automatically.

How to set up free Google listings on WooCommerce
WooCommerce stores use the official Google for WooCommerce extension, which links your store to Merchant Center and sends your products to Google. The steps are similar to Shopify, with a little more checking on your side.
- Install Google for WooCommerce from the WordPress plugins area.
- Connect your WordPress.com and Google accounts when the set-up wizard asks.
- Create or link a Merchant Center account and let the extension verify and claim your website.
- Select South Africa as your target audience and set your delivery rates and times.
- Sync your products and review any issues the extension reports.
According to WooCommerce's Google for WooCommerce documentation, products go through an initial review against Google's requirements before they can show. Our guide on how to set up a WooCommerce store in South Africa covers the store basics.
The product data Google needs
Your product feed is everything Google knows about your products, so its quality decides how often you appear. Accurate titles, prices, stock status, images and product identifiers are essential, and missing identifiers are a common cause of disapprovals.
Unique product identifiers
Google's article on syncing your products from Shopify explains that products with a GTIN (the barcode number) can be published with it, while products without one need an MPN and brand. It also warns that incorrect identifiers can stop products being published and can lead to account suspension. Never invent a barcode. If you make your own products, leave the GTIN blank and supply your brand and an MPN.
Titles and descriptions that match real searches
Google recommends using the words customers search for in your titles and descriptions. Lead with the product type and the details shoppers compare, such as size, material, colour or quantity. "Bamboo Cutting Board Set of 3, with Juice Groove" will match far more searches than a brand name on its own.
The same writing skills that help your product pages rank will help your feed. Our guide on how to write product descriptions for SEO in South Africa walks through it step by step.
Images and attributes
Use clear, high-quality photos on a plain background for the main image, without watermarks or promotional text. Google also recommends adding relevant attributes such as size or gender and giving each product a detailed product type with at least three levels, for example "Home > Kitchen > Cutting Boards".

Common reasons products get disapproved
Most disapprovals come from a mismatch between your feed and your website, or from missing information. Google's product statuses (approved, limited, not approved or under review) tell you where to look.
- Price mismatch. The price in your feed must match the price on the product page, including any sale price.
- Stock mismatch. Products marked in stock in the feed but sold out on your site will be flagged.
- Missing identifiers. No GTIN, or no brand and MPN where there is no GTIN.
- Weak images. Watermarks, text overlays or images that are too small.
- Missing delivery information for South Africa.
- Restricted products. Some categories are limited by Google's policies. Our post on what products you can't sell online in South Africa covers the local rules as well.
Fix issues in your store rather than in Merchant Center where possible, so the next sync carries the correction.
How to get more visibility from free listings
Once your products are approved, visibility depends on how well your data matches what people search and how competitive your offer is.
- Improve titles first. They carry the most weight in matching searches.
- Keep prices and stock accurate by leaving automatic sync switched on.
- Show competitive delivery. Free or low-cost delivery is visible to shoppers comparing stores.
- Collect reviews. Trust matters to cautious South African shoppers, and reviews strengthen your product pages too.
- Be patient. Google notes that new sellers may need time before products appear in relevant results.
Your Merchant Center data also feeds Google's AI features. Our guide on getting your products in Google AI Overviews explains how the same feed helps there.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Merchant Center free in South Africa?
Yes. Creating a Merchant Center account and showing products in free listings costs nothing. You only pay if you choose to run Shopping or Performance Max ads through a linked Google Ads account.
How long does it take for products to appear on Google Shopping?
Products first go through Google's review, and Google does not publish a fixed timeframe for new stores. Check your product statuses after a few days, fix any errors and allow some extra time for a new store before approved products start appearing in results.
Do I need a GTIN to list products on Google?
Not always. If your product has a manufacturer barcode, include it. If it does not, such as handmade or private label products, provide your brand name and an MPN instead. Never enter a made-up GTIN.
