How to Write Product Descriptions for SEO in South Africa

copywriting ecommerce ecommerce seo product descriptions selling online south africa seo south africa south africa

To write product descriptions for SEO, start with the exact words South African shoppers type into Google, then write an original description that uses those words naturally while answering every question a buyer has before they pay. A good SEO product description has a keyword-led title, a short benefit-focused opening, a scannable list of specifications and the local details (delivery, sizing, returns) that help a cautious shopper decide. Write for the buyer first and Google second.

Product pages are where search traffic turns into orders, which is why they feature heavily in our complete guide to SEO for online stores in South Africa. This post goes deeper on one job from that guide: writing the description itself, step by step, with a template you can reuse on every product.

Why product descriptions matter for SEO

Product descriptions give Google the text it needs to understand what you sell and which searches your page should appear for. A page with a photo, a price and two lines of supplier copy gives Google almost nothing to work with, so it rarely ranks.

Descriptions also decide whether a visitor buys. Shopify's guide to writing SEO product descriptions cites Akeneo research showing that 34% of consumers were frustrated by incomplete or unclear product descriptions. A page that ranks but does not answer the buyer's questions just sends traffic back to Google.

Step 1: Find the keyword for each product

Every product page should target one main search phrase plus two to four related phrases. Choose the phrase a buyer would type when they are close to purchasing, not the broad category term.

Use these free methods to find it:

  • Google autocomplete: type your product type into Google and note the suggestions, especially ones that add a size, material, colour or "South Africa".
  • Takealot and Amazon.co.za search bars: marketplace suggestions show how local buyers describe the product when they are ready to buy.
  • Google Search Console: once a product page has impressions, the Performance report shows the actual searches it appears for.
  • Customer messages: the words customers use on WhatsApp and in reviews are often better keywords than anything a tool suggests.

For example, "baby carrier" is too broad for a new store to win. "Ergonomic baby carrier for newborns" or "hip seat baby carrier South Africa" are specific, have clear buying intent and face far less competition.

If you sell several similar products, give each page its own angle (size, material or use case) and let your collection page target the broader category phrase.

Step 2: Write an SEO product title

Your product title should say what the product is in the words people search, followed by the detail that sets it apart. On most Shopify and WooCommerce themes the product title becomes the page's main heading, so it carries a lot of weight.

A reliable pattern is: product type + key feature + size, quantity or variant detail. Compare these two titles:

  • Weak: "The Explorer"
  • Strong: "Insulated Water Bottle 750ml, Stainless Steel, Keeps Drinks Cold for 24 Hours"

The first might suit your brand, but nobody searches for it.

Step 3: Use a proven description structure

The best SEO product descriptions follow a predictable structure that works for shoppers on a phone and for Google. Lead with a short summary, follow with benefits, then give the specifications and practical details in a scannable format.

Use this template for every product:

  1. Opening summary (one to three sentences): what the product is, who it is for and the main result it delivers. Include your main keyword here naturally.
  2. Key benefits (three to five bullet points): each one links a feature to what it does for the buyer.
  3. Specifications: size, weight, materials, compatibility, what is in the box and care instructions.
  4. Local buying details: delivery times, delivery cost or free-delivery threshold, returns and warranty.
  5. Short FAQ (optional): two or three questions customers regularly ask before buying.

Shopify's guidance recommends keeping the opening short for mobile shoppers, with one example prompt asking for a first paragraph under 40 words. That suits South Africa well, where most store visits happen on a phone.

Turn features into benefits

A feature is what the product has. A benefit is what that feature does for the buyer. "Double-wall vacuum insulation" is a feature. "Keeps your water ice cold through a full day at the beach" is the benefit. Lead with the benefit and support it with the feature.

Step 4: Place keywords where they count

Use your main keyword once in the title, once in the opening summary and once in the meta title. After that, use related phrases and natural variations rather than repeating the same words.

The fields that matter most for product page SEO are:

Field What to include Common mistake
Product title Product type, key feature, size or variant A brand name only
Opening summary Main keyword and main benefit Generic praise such as "high quality"
Meta title Keyword near the start, under about 60 characters The store name on every product
Meta description A reason to click, such as fast delivery Left blank or duplicated
Image alt text A plain description of what the photo shows File names like IMG_2041

If a sentence sounds awkward because you forced a keyword into it, rewrite it. Keyword stuffing makes a page harder to read and does not help it rank.

Step 5: Make every description original

Copying the manufacturer's or supplier's description is the most common reason product pages fail to rank. When dozens of stores publish the same text, Google has little reason to show your version over the others.

This matters most if you dropship or buy from wholesalers, because every other reseller has access to the same copy. Rewrite each description in your own words and add something the supplier text does not have:

  • Your own photos or a short video of the product in use
  • Sizing advice based on the products you have handled yourself
  • Answers to the questions your customers actually ask
  • Local context, such as how the product handles South African summer heat or load shedding

How long should a product description be?

There is no ideal word count. Match the length to how much a buyer needs to know. A familiar, low-cost item such as a phone cable may need 80 to 150 words plus specifications. A higher-priced or unfamiliar product, such as a baby car seat or a solar power bank, often needs 300 words or more to answer every concern.

Step 6: Use AI tools carefully

AI tools such as ChatGPT or Shopify's built-in assistant can speed up first drafts, but they should never publish straight to your store. Every AI draft needs a human to check the facts, add real product knowledge and remove generic phrases.

Google's guidance on using generative AI content says it is critical to manually fact-check and review all AI-generated content before publishing. It also warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may break its spam policy on scaled content abuse. Google Merchant Center also has separate policies requiring AI-generated product titles and descriptions in a product feed to be labelled as such.

Use AI to suggest a structure or a list of benefits, then rewrite the result with details only you know. Our post on the risks of using ChatGPT to write content for your website explains where AI helps and where it causes problems.

Step 7: Support the description with the rest of the page

A strong description works best on a page that also builds trust. Check these elements on every product page:

  • Reviews: customer reviews add fresh, original wording and reassure first-time buyers.
  • Delivery and returns: state delivery times and costs clearly on the page, not only at checkout.
  • Structured data: most modern Shopify themes and WooCommerce SEO plugins add product markup with price, currency and stock status. Make sure it matches what shoppers see.
  • Internal links: link from the description to the relevant collection and to related products.

A quick before and after example

Here is how a typical supplier description changes when it is rewritten for SEO and for South African buyers.

Before: "High quality bottle. Stainless steel. 750ml. Many colours. Perfect gift."

After: "This 750ml insulated stainless steel water bottle keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours, so your water is still ice cold at the end of a hot Durban beach day. The leak-proof lid fits in a school bag or gym bag without spills."

The rewrite names the product the way people search, gives a specific result and adds local context. Add a benefits list, specifications and delivery details below it.

Before you publish, check the claims. "Up to 24 hours" must match the manufacturer's tested specification. Never promise performance you cannot back up.

Frequently asked questions about SEO product descriptions

Should I use the manufacturer's product description?

You can use it as a source of specifications, but do not publish it unchanged. Rewrite it in your own words and add information that helps your buyers, such as sizing advice, local delivery details and answers to common questions. Original descriptions give Google a reason to rank your page.

Can I use ChatGPT to write product descriptions?

Yes, as a starting point. Review every draft for accuracy, add real product knowledge and remove generic wording before publishing. Google says AI-generated content should be fact-checked and must add value for users.
