Best AI Visibility Tools for Online Stores in South Africa

The best AI visibility tools for online stores in South Africa start with free ones. HubSpot's AEO Grader gives you a quick snapshot of how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini describe your brand. Bing Webmaster Tools shows when Copilot cites your pages and Google Analytics 4 shows which AI tools send you visitors. When you are ready to pay, Otterly.AI's Lite plan at $29 a month is the cheapest established tracker, Peec AI suits growing stores and Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit makes sense if you already use Semrush.

AI visibility tools answer one question: when a shopper asks an AI assistant for a product you sell, does your store come up? Tracking that is the measurement side of generative engine optimisation. If you are new to the topic, start with our complete guide to GEO for online stores in South Africa, which covers the groundwork these tools measure.

This guide compares the free and paid options with prices checked in November 2026. Most paid tools bill in US dollars or euros, so your rand cost will move with the exchange rate.

What does an AI visibility tool actually do?

An AI visibility tool sends a list of questions (called prompts) to AI assistants on a schedule and records which brands and websites appear in the answers. Over time it shows whether you are mentioned more or less often than your competitors.

Most tools report on the same handful of measures:

  • Mentions: how often your brand name appears in answers to your tracked prompts.
  • Citations: how often the AI links to your pages as a source.
  • Share of voice: your mentions compared with competitors for the same prompts.
  • Sentiment: whether the AI describes your brand positively, neutrally or negatively.
  • Source pages: which websites the AI relies on, which shows you where to earn reviews and mentions.

Keep one limitation in mind. AI answers change from one conversation to the next and depend on the user's location and history. Every tool is taking a sample, not a complete record. Treat the numbers as a trend line rather than an exact score.

Free AI visibility tools to start with

A beginner store can learn most of what it needs from free tools and a monthly routine. Start here before you spend anything in dollars.

HubSpot AEO Grader

The HubSpot AEO Grader is a free, one-off check. You enter your brand and it asks OpenAI, Perplexity and Gemini about you, then gives a score out of 100 across sentiment, presence quality, brand recognition, share of voice and market competition. You need to complete a form to see the full report.

It is useful for a first read on how AI tools see your store. It does not track individual product prompts over time, so it is a starting point rather than a monitoring system.

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report

Bing Webmaster Tools now includes an AI Performance report that shows when Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages. According to Practical Ecommerce, it lists the grounding queries the AI used when it cited you and which of your URLs were cited. It does not show clicks.

Setup is quick. Sign in with a Microsoft account and import your site from Google Search Console. It is one of the few free sources of citation data that comes straight from an AI assistant, so it is worth switching on.

Google Analytics 4

GA4 will not tell you how often you are mentioned, but it shows the visits and sales that AI tools send you. Our guide on how to track AI traffic in GA4 for your online store shows how to group referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com into one report.

A manual prompt spreadsheet

Write down 15 to 20 questions your customers would ask, such as "where can I buy a baby carrier online in South Africa". Once a month, ask each one in a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Record whether you appear and which competitors are named.

Paid AI visibility tools compared

Paid tools automate the prompt checks, run them more often and add competitor and source analysis. These are the options most relevant to a small or growing South African store.

Tool Entry price (monthly billing) Prompts on entry plan Best for
Otterly.AI Lite $29 15 Solo owners on a tight budget
Peec AI Starter $95 Varies by plan Growing stores with a marketer
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit $99 25 Stores already using Semrush
Ahrefs Brand Radar From $199 (needs an Ahrefs plan) Index-based Existing Ahrefs customers

Prices are from each vendor's pricing or help pages and the November 2026 comparison by eSEOspace. Annual billing is cheaper on most of these tools. Check the vendor's page before you subscribe, because AI tool pricing changes often.

Otterly.AI: the cheapest way to start tracking

Otterly.AI is the most affordable established tracker. Its Lite plan costs $29 a month ($25 a month billed annually) and tracks 15 prompts. Every plan covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude are paid add-ons.

Fifteen prompts is enough for a beginner store to track its most important product and category questions. The Standard plan jumps to $189 a month for 100 prompts, which is a big step up, so outgrow the Lite plan before upgrading.

Peec AI: more depth for growing stores

Peec AI's Starter plan costs $95 a month on monthly billing (about $80 a month billed annually). On the Starter plan you choose three AI engines from a list that includes ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot, with extra engines available as add-ons.

Peec is aimed at small teams and in-house marketers. It suits a store that is actively working on reviews, PR and content and wants to compare its visibility with competitors to see whether the effort is paying off.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: for existing Semrush users

Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit costs $99 a month for one project and one domain, with 25 tracked prompts and AI search checks on up to 100 pages in Site Audit. You can add 50 more prompts for $60 a month. Semrush names ChatGPT and Google AI Mode among the platforms it covers.

If you already use Semrush for keyword research, having SEO and AI visibility in one dashboard is convenient. If you do not, Otterly or Peec give you more AI-specific features for the money.

Enterprise tools you can skip for now

Tools such as Profound, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Scrunch are built for large brands and agencies. They track many engines across hundreds or thousands of prompts. A store doing its first few hundred orders a month will not get its money's worth.

What South African sellers should check before paying

Most AI visibility tools are built for US and European brands, so ask a few questions before you enter your card details.

  • Can you set South Africa as the location? AI answers differ by country. A tool that only checks from the US may not reflect what a shopper in Durban sees.
  • What will it cost in rand? Dollar and euro billing means your monthly cost moves with the exchange rate. Your bank may also charge a foreign transaction fee on each payment.
  • Which engines are included? Some plans charge extra for Gemini, Claude or Google AI Mode. Make sure the engines your customers use are covered.
  • Is there a free trial? Otterly lets you start without a credit card. Use any trial to test your real prompts before committing.

Which AI visibility tool should you choose?

Match the tool to the size of your store. Paying for tracking only makes sense once you have the time to act on what it shows you.

  1. Just starting out: use the HubSpot AEO Grader once, switch on Bing Webmaster Tools, set up AI traffic in GA4 and keep a monthly prompt spreadsheet. Cost: nothing.
  2. Making regular sales and publishing content: add Otterly.AI Lite to automate your 15 most important prompts.
  3. Growing with a marketer or agency: move to Peec AI or Otterly Standard for more prompts and competitor analysis.
  4. Already paying for Semrush or Ahrefs: try their AI add-ons first so your data stays in one place.

How to get real value from AI visibility tracking

A tracking tool only measures. The results improve when you change what AI tools find about your store.

Choose prompts that match buying intent, such as "best online store for school shoes in Johannesburg", rather than vague questions. Include a few prompts that name your competitors. When a competitor appears and you do not, look at the source pages the AI cites. Those are the reviews, directories and articles where you need to be mentioned.

Then work on the fixes. Our guides on getting your online store recommended by ChatGPT and getting your products into Google AI Overviews explain what to change on your product pages and beyond. Re-check your prompts monthly and compare the trend, not individual answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI visibility checker?

Yes. The HubSpot AEO Grader is a free one-off check across OpenAI, Perplexity and Gemini. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report is free ongoing citation data for Copilot. Together with GA4 and a manual prompt spreadsheet, they cover the basics for a small store.

How do I check if ChatGPT mentions my store?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask, in a fresh chat with memory off. Note whether your store appears. For regular tracking, a tool such as Otterly.AI or Peec AI runs the same prompts automatically and records the results over time.

Do I need an AI visibility tool if I already track SEO?

Not at first. Strong SEO is the foundation of AI visibility. Free tools can show you whether AI search is sending visitors. A paid tracker becomes worthwhile when AI referrals start to matter to your revenue and you want to know why competitors are being recommended instead of you.
