How to Prepare Your Online Store for Black Friday in South Africa

To prepare your online store for Black Friday in South Africa, decide on one or two offers that still leave you a profit, confirm your stock, test every payment method, line up your courier and start building an audience of people who want to hear about your deals before the day arrives. Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, so you have just over three weeks. That is enough time to get ready properly if you start now and keep the plan simple.

Black Friday is also one of the best chances a new store has to get its first wave of customers, because South African shoppers are actively looking for places to buy. If you are still working towards your first orders, read our complete guide to getting your first sales online in South Africa alongside this checklist.

This guide covers the key dates, how to choose offers, the stock, payment and delivery checks to run and a week-by-week countdown you can follow from today.

When is Black Friday 2026 in South Africa?

Black Friday 2026 is on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday follows on Monday 30 November. In practice, most South African retailers now run deals across the whole weekend and many start earlier in the month.

Takealot has confirmed it will run its annual Blue Dot Sale around Black Friday again this year, according to Cape Town ETC's report on Takealot's Black Friday 2026 plans. Big retailers warm up their customers for weeks, so a store that announces its deals on the 27th will struggle to be heard.

The timing this year also works in sellers' favour. Many South Africans are paid on or around the 25th, which falls on the Wednesday before Black Friday. Customers will have money in their accounts going into the weekend.

Should a new online store take part in Black Friday?

Yes, if you can offer a deal without losing money on every order. Shoppers are in a buying mood and many are prepared to try a store they have not used before, which is exactly what a new business needs.

The scale of online spending makes the case. Peach Payments reported processing more than R1.86 billion across 2.69 million transactions over the 2025 Black Friday weekend, a 93% increase on 2024, in its Black Friday 2025 results. Standard Bank told ITWeb that its customers' online spend volumes grew 75% over the same weekend.

The risk is joining in for the sake of it. If your margins are thin or your stock is limited, a modest offer to a small, warm audience is better than a deep discount that empties your shelves at a loss.

Choose Black Friday deals that protect your margin

The best Black Friday deals for small online stores give customers a clear reason to buy now without wiping out your profit. Work out your profit per order first, then choose the offer.

Start with a simple calculation for each product you plan to promote: selling price, minus product cost, payment fees, packaging and delivery. Whatever is left is the most you can give away. If a 30% discount leaves you with R5 per order, it is not a deal worth running.

Offer types that work for small stores

  • Free delivery above a set order value: encourages bigger baskets and removes a common reason for abandoned checkouts.
  • Bundles: pair a best seller with a slower-moving item at a combined price. You move more stock and protect the price of your hero product.
  • A gift with purchase: a small add-on often costs you less than a percentage discount but feels generous.
  • Tiered discounts: for example, 10% off one item and 20% off three. This rewards larger orders.
  • Early access for subscribers: give your email and WhatsApp list the deal a day before everyone else.

Be honest with your pricing. Do not raise prices in early November so that a discount looks bigger. South Africa's Consumer Protection Act prohibits misleading pricing claims. Customers notice too. Our guide to eCommerce pricing strategies for South Africa explains how to build costs into your prices.

Check your stock and suppliers now

Running out of stock halfway through Black Friday loses sales and frustrates customers, while overbuying ties up cash you need in January. Order based on realistic numbers, not hope.

  • Estimate demand from your normal weekly sales, the size of your email and WhatsApp lists and any engagement on your teaser posts.
  • Confirm lead times today. Local suppliers are busy in November and imported stock ordered now is unlikely to arrive in time.
  • Turn on stock tracking in Shopify or WooCommerce so products show as sold out automatically rather than taking orders you cannot fill.
  • Pack ahead. Pre-pack your most popular items or bundles so you can dispatch quickly on Monday.

Test your checkout and payment methods

Your Black Friday checklist must include a full test of your checkout, because a failed payment on your busiest day is a lost sale you will never see. Place a real order with every payment method you offer.

Give customers more than one way to pay. Card is still the most common method, but alternatives are growing quickly. Peach Payments reported that buy now, pay later value on its platform grew 753% over the 2025 Black Friday weekend compared with 2024. Instant EFT and bank-app options such as Capitec Pay give customers a fallback when a card or OTP fails. Our guide to the best payment gateway for Shopify in South Africa compares the options.

While you test, check your site on a phone over mobile data and make sure discount codes apply correctly at checkout.

Plan deliveries and keep customers informed

Couriers handle much higher volumes over Black Friday and the weeks that follow, so set realistic delivery times and communicate them clearly. Under-promising and over-delivering protects your reviews.

  • Speak to your courier about collection times, any peak-season surcharges and their cut-off dates for December delivery.
  • Update delivery times on product pages and in your order confirmation emails for the sale period.
  • Offer locker or collection options where you can, as many customers prefer them.
  • Send tracking updates by email or WhatsApp so customers do not have to ask where their order is.

Build your Black Friday audience before the day

The stores that sell most over Black Friday usually built their audience in the weeks before. Use November to collect the people who want to hear about your deals, then reach them directly.

Black Friday email marketing

Add a simple sign-up offer to your store, such as "Get early access to our Black Friday deals". Send a short teaser email in mid-November, an early-access email the evening before and a reminder before the sale ends. Only email people who have opted in, in line with the POPI Act. Our guide on how to build an email list for your online store in South Africa walks through the tools and consent rules.

WhatsApp and social media

WhatsApp works well for Black Friday because messages are read quickly. Invite customers to join a broadcast list for deal alerts and post your offers on your WhatsApp status. See how to sell on WhatsApp in South Africa for setup steps.

On social media, post short videos showing the products in your sale and announce the start time clearly. If you plan to run paid ads, set them up and get them approved well before the weekend so they are not stuck in review when the sale starts.

A four-week Black Friday countdown

This countdown turns the checklist into weekly tasks. Adjust it to the size of your store and the time you have available.

Week Focus Key tasks
3 to 9 November Plan Calculate margins, choose offers, confirm stock and supplier lead times.
10 to 16 November Prepare Test checkout and payments, brief your courier, add an early-access sign-up.
17 to 23 November Build demand Send teaser emails, post previews, get any ads approved, pre-pack bundles.
24 to 30 November Sell Early access for subscribers, launch on Black Friday, reminders through Cyber Monday.

Even if you only manage the first two weeks properly, you will be better prepared than most new stores.

After the weekend: turn Black Friday buyers into repeat customers

Black Friday customers are most valuable when they come back at full price. The work you do in the days after the sale decides whether that happens.

  • Dispatch quickly and send tracking details, because a smooth first order earns a second one.
  • Follow up with abandoned checkouts during the sale. Our post on what to do about abandoned carts has practical ideas.
  • Ask for a review about a week after delivery, while the experience is fresh.
  • Invite buyers to your festive range or a December gift guide, without another discount.
  • Review your numbers: orders, conversion rate, average order value and profit after costs. Note what to change next year.

Black Friday FAQs for South African online stores

How early should I start preparing for Black Friday?

Ideally a month or more ahead, so you have time to order stock, test your checkout and build an audience. If you are starting closer to the date, focus on one strong offer, a working checkout and messages to the customers you already have.

How much discount should I give on Black Friday?

There is no standard figure. Calculate your profit per order after product cost, payment fees, packaging and delivery, then decide what you can afford. Bundles, free delivery and gifts with purchase often protect your margin better than a large percentage discount.

Is Cyber Monday worth running in South Africa?

Yes. Ozow told ITWeb that Cyber Monday overtook Black Friday in retail transaction volumes on its platform in 2025. Extending your offer to Monday gives late shoppers and payday latecomers a second chance to buy.

Make this Black Friday count with Insaka

Black Friday rewards stores that plan. A clear offer, a checkout that works and an audience that is waiting for your deals will do more for a small store than any last-minute discount.
