How to Choose a Courier for Your Online Store in South Africa

courier ecommerce logistics shipping south africa

The best courier for an online store in South Africa is the one that fits your parcel size, your customers' locations and the delivery experience they expect. Most small sellers end up using a mix: a locker or pick-up point network for small parcels and a door-to-door courier for everything else. Compare live quotes before you commit, because rates change often.

Shipping is one of the few costs you can control directly. A poor courier choice shows up as lost parcels, angry customers and refunds that wipe out your margin. This guide shows you what to compare, which delivery methods suit which sellers and how to pick a courier in five steps.

What should you compare before choosing a courier?

Compare six things: parcel size and weight limits, coverage, speed, tracking, claims handling and how well the courier connects to your store. Price matters, but it is only one line on the list.

  • Parcel limits: Check maximum weight and dimensions. Lockers and pick-up points have fixed box sizes.
  • Coverage: Make sure your customers' areas are served, including towns outside the big metros.
  • Speed: Express door-to-door and store-to-store services can differ by several working days.
  • Tracking: Customers expect tracking links. Fewer "where is my order" emails save you time.
  • Claims: Find out how lost or damaged parcels are handled and what cover is included.
  • Integration: Check for a Shopify or WooCommerce connection or a shipping platform that handles it.

Which delivery method suits which seller?

Locker and pick-up point services suit small, light parcels and price-sensitive customers. Door-to-door couriers suit heavier or higher-value orders where convenience and speed matter more than the lowest price.

Pudo lockers

Pudo is a smart locker network run by The Courier Guy. According to BusinessTech, it offers locker-to-locker, door-to-locker and locker-to-door options with a 20kg maximum and delivery in one to four business days. Customers collect with a PIN or QR code, so nobody needs to be home.

Pudo works well when your products are small and your customers are comfortable collecting from a locker. Insaka covered the early rollout in our post on Pudo for small online businesses.

Pargo and Paxi pick-up points

Pargo lets customers choose a collection point at checkout. Pargo states that it has over 4000 collection points, including Clicks and Caltex stores. Paxi is a similar store-to-store service and has been one of the cheapest options, though slower.

Offering a pick-up point is useful for customers in complexes or areas where deliveries go missing.

Door-to-door couriers

The Courier Guy, Fastway and RAM are the names sellers mention most for national door-to-door delivery. You pay more than for lockers, but customers get delivery at the gate and a faster experience. This is the safer choice for fragile or high-value orders.

How much does a courier cost for a small online store?

Expect pick-up points and lockers to be cheaper than door-to-door for small parcels. The most recent public price comparison we could verify is from MyBroadband in October 2024, covering parcels up to 5kg.

ServiceTypePrice (Oct 2024)
PaxiStore to storeR59.95
PudoLocker to lockerR60
PudoLocker to doorR70
D2DDoor to doorR89

Treat these as a guide to the price gap between methods rather than today's rates. Courier prices change with fuel and annual increases, so always get a live quote before you set your shipping fees. MyBroadband listed Paxi store-to-store delivery at 7 to 9 working days, so the cheapest option is also the slowest.

How does volumetric weight affect your shipping cost?

Couriers charge on whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight of the box. A large, light parcel can cost far more than its scale weight suggests.

Fastway explains its formula on its weight guide: height multiplied by width multiplied by length in centimetres, divided by 5000. Its example is a 50cm x 30cm x 50cm parcel, which works out to 15kg. If that box holds a 2kg cushion, you still pay for 15kg.

The fix is simple. Use the smallest box that protects the product and check each courier's formula, because divisors differ between companies.

Which courier do other South African sellers use?

The Courier Guy is the most popular choice among small businesses. A 2025 Float survey of over 100 South African businesses found The Courier Guy in the top three for national shipping for 75.5% of respondents. RAM followed at 18.6% and Fastway at 13.7%.

For international shipping the same survey put DHL first at 35% overall. Popularity is not the same as the right fit for your products, but it shows which networks are widely trusted and well supported by shipping tools.

Should you use a shipping platform like Bob Go?

A shipping platform makes sense once you ship more than a handful of orders a week. It lets you compare couriers, print labels and send tracking updates without logging in to each courier separately.

Bob Go lists The Courier Guy, RAM, SkyNet, Fastway, Pargo and WumDrop among its courier partners, plus its own Bob Box locker service. It also offers rates at checkout, so customers can choose a delivery option. A free 14-day trial is available. Our broader guide to eCommerce logistics in South Africa covers order tracking and returns in more detail.

How do you choose a courier in five steps?

Work through these steps once and review them every six months.

  1. Measure your typical parcel. Record the weight and box size for your top ten products.
  2. Map your customers. Note whether they are mostly metro or regional buyers.
  3. Get live quotes. Request prices from two or three couriers for the same parcels and destinations.
  4. Test with real orders. Ship a few orders with each option and track delivery time and condition.
  5. Offer a choice at checkout. Give customers a cheap pick-up point option and a faster door-to-door option.

If your volumes grow, a third-party warehouse can take over packing and dispatch. See our post on whether to use an outsourced 3PL warehouse for the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to send parcels in South Africa?

Store-to-store and locker-to-locker services such as Paxi and Pudo have been the cheapest options for small parcels. They are slower or less flexible than door-to-door delivery. Get a live quote for your parcel size to confirm today's price.

Which courier do most South African online sellers use?

In the 2025 Float survey, The Courier Guy was named in the top three for national shipping by most respondents. RAM and Fastway followed. The best choice for you still depends on your parcel sizes and customer locations.

How is courier cost calculated?

Cost is based on the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight, plus the delivery method and distance. Fastway divides length x width x height in centimetres by 5000 to get volumetric weight.
