How to Get Your Products in Google AI Overviews in South Africa
To get your products into Google AI Overviews in South Africa, you need three things: product pages that Google can index and quote, an accurate product feed in Google Merchant Center and enough reviews and outside mentions to show your products are trusted. Google says there is no special code or file that guarantees a spot. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index, product data and quality signals as normal Google Search, so the work is about doing the basics properly and consistently.
This post focuses only on Google. If you want the full picture across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini, start with our complete guide to GEO for online stores in South Africa. Below, you will find a practical checklist for South African sellers on Shopify, WooCommerce or any other platform.
What are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear above the normal results for many Google searches. AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search where shoppers can have a longer conversation, ask follow-up questions and compare products.
Both are live for South African users. Google launched AI Mode in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya on 21 August 2025, according to TechCentral. In March 2026 Google added 13 African languages to AI Overviews and AI Mode, including Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sesotho and Setswana, as reported by Lifestyle and Tech.
How Google chooses which products and pages to show
Google builds these answers by running several related searches at once, a technique it calls "query fan-out", then summarising the most helpful sources. For product questions it also draws on its Shopping Graph, the database of product listings that powers Google Shopping. Shopify reports that the Shopping Graph contains more than 50 billion listings and that missing product details can cause the AI to leave a product out of results.
In practice, Google looks for three things:
- Indexed pages with clear text it can quote
- Complete, accurate product data from your feed and structured data
- Signals of trust such as reviews, ratings and mentions on other sites
Step 1: Make sure Google can index and quote your pages
A page can only appear in AI Overviews if it is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Google Search. Google's guide to AI features and your website states that there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed beyond that.
Work through these checks:
- Verify your store in Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
- Use the URL Inspection tool on your top five product pages to confirm they are indexed.
- Check for snippet blocks. Tags such as nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex limit what Google can show. Some themes and SEO plugins add them by mistake.
- Check robots.txt and your firewall. Security plugins and hosting bot protection sometimes block Googlebot.
- Keep key details in text. Product names, prices, sizes and delivery details should be in the page text, not only inside images.
Google warns that recrawling can take from several days to several months, so fix problems early rather than the week before Black Friday.
Step 2: Set up Google Merchant Center and free listings
Google Merchant Center is the most direct way to give Google accurate product data. It is free and South Africa is on Google's list of countries where you can show products for free on Google, across the Shopping tab, Search, Images, Lens and YouTube.
How you connect depends on your platform:
| Platform | How to connect | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Google & YouTube app | Sync errors and missing GTINs |
| WooCommerce | Google for WooCommerce plugin or a feed plugin | Prices matching the site after sales |
| Other platforms | Scheduled feed file or Google Sheets | How often stock levels update |
Once connected, open the Diagnostics or Needs attention section every week. A disapproved product cannot appear in free listings and is unlikely to be picked up in AI shopping answers.
Feed fields that matter most
- Title: brand, product type and the key attribute, for example "Ubuntu Baby Organic Cotton Swaddle Blanket, 120 x 120 cm"
- Price in ZAR that matches your product page exactly
- Availability that updates when stock runs out
- GTIN or barcode for branded products, plus brand and MPN where relevant
- Shipping cost and delivery time for South Africa
- Google product category and product type
- Clean images on a plain background, with extra angles
Choosing a platform that makes feeds easy saves hours each month. Our guide to choosing an eCommerce platform in South Africa compares how Shopify and WooCommerce handle this.
Step 3: Write product pages AI Overviews can quote
AI Overviews lift short, factual statements that answer the shopper's question directly. Product pages that open with a clear summary are much easier to quote than pages built from supplier copy or slogans.
Open each product description with one or two sentences covering what the product is, who it suits and its main specification. Then add the details shoppers ask about in your inbox and on WhatsApp:
- Sizes, materials and dimensions in metric units
- What is in the box and what is not
- Delivery times to the main metros and outlying areas
- Your returns policy in plain words
- Three to five short FAQs with real customer questions
Use the words South Africans search with. "Load shedding", "braai", "school shoes" and "delivered to Polokwane" rarely appear in imported supplier descriptions, yet they appear in local searches. Because Google runs several related searches for each question, pages that answer the follow-up questions too have more chances to be included.
Step 4: Add structured data that matches the page
Structured data is code that labels your product name, price, currency, availability and rating for search engines. Google says you do not need special schema to appear in AI features, but it does require that structured data matches what shoppers see on the page.
Focus on Product and Offer markup on every product page, AggregateRating where you have genuine reviews and Organization markup on your home or About page. Most Shopify themes output basic product markup automatically. WooCommerce stores usually rely on an SEO plugin. Test a few URLs in Google's Rich Results Test and fix any errors or mismatched prices.
Step 5: Build reviews and mentions beyond your store
Google's shopping results consider customer reviews and ratings as well as product attributes. Reviews on your own product pages help, but reviews and mentions on independent sites carry more weight because they show that other people trust you.
- Google Business Profile: claim it and ask happy customers for reviews
- Product reviews: use a review app that collects reviews after delivery and adds rating markup
- Independent sites: Hellopeter, local gift guides, niche blogs and YouTube reviews
- Marketplaces: Takealot and Amazon.co.za listings often appear in AI answers too
Never buy or fake reviews. Apart from breaking platform rules, inconsistent review patterns undermine the trust signals you are trying to build.
Step 6: Publish helpful content around your products
Product pages alone rarely win AI Overviews for broader questions. Buying guides, comparisons and how-to articles on your blog give Google more passages to cite and naturally link to your products.
Good examples for a South African store include "How to choose a solar power bank for load shedding", "Cotton vs bamboo baby blankets" or "What size braai grid do I need?". Answer the question in the first two sentences, use clear H2 headings phrased as questions, add a simple table where it helps and cite sources for any facts. Our post on the risks of using ChatGPT to write website content explains why unedited AI articles rarely earn citations. Put Step 6 on autopilot
No time to write buying guides for your store?
The GEO AI Content Engine turns Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini into your own content writer. It researches what your customers are searching for, writes buying guides and comparisons that link to your products and saves them as drafts in your store for you to review.
How to check whether your products appear in AI Overviews
There is no dedicated AI Overviews report yet, so combine a manual check with your analytics. Google states that clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall Web search data in Search Console, not shown separately.
- Manual check: list 15 to 20 questions your customers ask. Search each one monthly in Google and in the AI Mode tab, signed out or in a private window. Record whether your store or products are named and which competitors appear.
- Search Console: watch impressions and clicks for longer, question-style queries on the Performance report.
- Google Analytics 4: compare organic revenue month to month and track AI referrals from other tools. Our guide on how to track AI traffic in GA4 shows how.
- Merchant Center: check clicks and impressions for free listings in the Performance section.
Common mistakes that keep products out of AI Overviews
Most stores missing from AI Overviews have a technical block or thin product data. The usual culprits are:
- Product pages that are not indexed, or blocked by a theme or plugin
- Copied supplier descriptions shared by dozens of other stores
- Different prices in the feed, structured data and product page
- Disapproved products left unfixed in Merchant Center
- No reviews anywhere outside the store's own website
- Paying for services that promise "guaranteed" AI Overview placement. Google states that inclusion is never guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. You cannot buy a place in the AI-written answer itself. Google Ads and Shopping ads are separate paid placements. Organic inclusion depends on your pages, product data and reputation, and Google states that inclusion is never guaranteed.
Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google states that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Focus on indexing, product data and content first.
How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?
Technical fixes can be picked up within days or weeks, but Google says recrawling can take up to several months. Reviews, content and brand mentions build visibility over several months, so treat it as an ongoing habit.
